Hybrid MLFF tolling system to be deployed on highways in southeastern France
The project will see the deployment of a multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) tolling system to the AREA network, which encompasses autoroutes A43, A41, and A49, east of Lyon. It involves the installation of nearly 30 additional gantries, covering approximately 430km of highway and marking an advancement in the region’s transportation infrastructure.
The newly implemented system is a hybrid model, replacing conventional entry toll plazas. Under the hybrid system, drivers will be detected by road cameras or DSRC tags as they enter the tolled sections of the highway.
Upon exiting, drivers will stop at toll plazas to pay the calculated toll amount, a process designed to ensure efficiency and ease for both light and heavy goods vehicles. The project is regarded as particularly noteworthy as the A43, A41, and A49 serve as key transit routes connecting Switzerland, Italy, and France. APRR awarded the contract in September 2023 and the final go-live date of the MLFF system is set for 2026.
