The proposal would be aimed at simplifying toll collection and enhance travel convenience on national highways utilsing the FASTag system.

Under the proposed plan, an annual pass priced at ₹3,000 (c. £30) would offer unlimited travel on all national highways and expressways for one year.

Additionally, a lifetime pass costing ₹30,000 (c. £300) would provide unlimited highway access for 15 years.

These passes would be integrated into the existing FASTag system, eliminating the need for additional equipment or documentation.

The initiative seeks to modernise India’s toll collection system by reducing congestion, promoting efficient use of national highways, and enhancing travel convenience for commuters.

By incorporating these passes into the current FASTag infrastructure, the government aims to streamline toll payments and encourage digital transactions.

As discussions progress, stakeholders are optimistic about the potential benefits for both commuters and the broader transport network.

A Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways spokesperson said: “The introduction of annual and lifetime FASTag passes will simplify toll payments, reduce congestion, and offer unprecedented convenience to commuters across the country.”
