Mexico City implements Kapsch ITS license plate recognition technology

An advanced Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) developed by Kapsch TrafficCom has been implemented on the Palmillas – Apaseo Highway, northwest of capital Mexico City.

The project included the installation of 21 traffic cameras, six variable message signs, one weather station, two weigh-in-motion stations, and five traffic counting points with axle-based classification.

A Vehicle Integrity System based on LPR (License Plate Recognition) cameras was implemented, allowing continuous vehicle tracking along the route.

All these components are integrated into Kapsch TrafficCom’s EcoTrafiX, which centralises real-time monitoring and operational decision-making from a control center.

This technology allows for the generation of origin-destination matrices, travel time calculations, detection of ‘lost’ vehicles, and prevention of illegal entries or exits.

The information generated by the system then enables real-time tracking of each vehicle, visibility of travel times for each subsection and the entire section, hourly occupancy levels, and queue times at toll plazas, all of which serve as support for operations and decision-making.

In case of anomalies, the system automatically sends alerts to the control center, significantly enhancing road safety.
